Outer Banks traffic on a summer Saturday is worst at midday, especially if you are heading north toward Duck and Corolla. In NCDOT's July 2022 study, Aydlett to north of Duck took just over 40 minutes in the morning. At midday it took over 100. Our reading of the data: if you can, cross the Wright Memorial Bridge before about 8 a.m. or wait until later in the afternoon.

Where these numbers come from

The figures below come from two traffic studies prepared for the North Carolina Turnpike Authority as part of the Mid-Currituck Bridge project.

  • 2022 Peak Season Traffic Analysis. A Stantec memo dated March 1, 2023, published on NCDOT's Connect site. Traffic counters ran at 25 locations from July 15 to July 24, 2022. Travel-time runs were driven from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, July 15 to 18, 2022.
  • 2025 Traffic and Revenue Report. Dated September 29, 2025. We read a copy posted by Coastal Review, a nonprofit news site. Its travel-time section did not load for us, so we use only its volume figures and field observations.

This is one peak week of measurement. Weather, crashes and holidays can change any given Saturday.

How long the drive takes on a Saturday

The 2022 study timed the trip from US-158 in Aydlett, on the mainland, over the bridge and up NC 12 past Duck. That is the route to Southern Shores, Duck and Corolla.

Saturday, July 16, 2022 Aydlett to north of Duck
Free-flow (no traffic) 36 minutes
Morning Just over 40 minutes
Midday Over 100 minutes
Evening Just above 60 minutes

The study does not give clock times for its morning, midday and evening periods. The runs covered 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On NC 12 between Virginia Dare Trail and Blue Heron Lane in Duck, average speeds fell fast that morning:

Time Average speed
6:47 a.m. 33 mph (close to free-flow)
8:14 a.m. 25 mph
10:05 a.m. 7 mph

How much more traffic Saturday brings

The 2022 study found Saturday peak-hour volumes on US-158 were more than three times weekday levels. Daily counts show the same pattern.

Location, peak week 2022 Mon to Thu, each direction Saturday, each direction
US-158 in Aydlett About 8,600 to 9,000 vehicles About 22,300 to 23,200 vehicles
Wright Memorial Bridge About 11,400 to 12,500 vehicles About 23,600 to 24,400 vehicles

Northbound NC 12 in Southern Shores carried more than 400 vehicles an hour from 7 a.m. on that Saturday. It stayed above that level until about 10 p.m.

The 2025 report adds that in peak season, roughly twice as many vehicles cross the bridge on a Saturday as on an average weekday. Sunday traffic is about 20 percent lower than Saturday's, but Sunday is still the second-busiest day.

Where it backs up

NC 12 north into Duck and Corolla

NC 12 is the main road to Southern Shores, Duck, Corolla and the 4x4 area. The 2025 report cites peak-season surveys from 2016 and 2017. They found northbound queues stretching from Duck back to NC 12 and Virginia Dare Trail from around 8 a.m. on Saturday. Police directed traffic at the US 158 and NC 12 intersection from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The speed limit also drops from 35 to 25 mph at the southern approach to Duck.

US-158 and the Wright Memorial Bridge

Traffic coming down US-158 from Virginia crosses this bridge. The 2025 report says the longest US 158 queues formed in the morning and midday periods.

South Dogwood Trail in Southern Shores

This 25 mph residential street runs parallel to NC 12. Navigation apps send drivers there when NC 12 backs up, sometimes for a minute's saving. In 2022 it carried 350 to 450 vehicles an hour from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The 2025 report notes that Google Maps considerably understated travel time on these back roads on a shoulder-season Saturday in 2023. It also notes local police posted signs to discourage left turns onto it. Our reading: expect slow going there too.

Leaving on Saturday

Departures add to the load. The 2025 report says Saturday southbound traffic on NC 12 toward the bridge was heavier than on a weekday or Sunday.

Friday and Sunday check-ins

Most Outer Banks rentals used to start and end on Saturdays. The 2022 study notes a push to move some contracts to Fridays and Sundays. Between 2018 and 2022, travel times rose in several periods, including Friday evening and Sunday midday and evening. On South Dogwood Trail, Sunday traffic peaked around 3 p.m. at about 400 vehicles an hour. A Sunday arrival can be easier than Saturday, but it is not traffic-free.

Routes to the southern beaches

If you are staying in Nags Head, on Roanoke Island or on Hatteras Island, you have a second way in. The National Park Service directions follow US-64 east through Williamston, Plymouth, Columbia and Manteo to Nags Head. That route reaches the north entrance of Cape Hatteras National Seashore without crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge. The 2022 study counted traffic on US-64 but did not publish travel times for it, so we cannot say how much time it saves.

Southern Shores asks visitors bound for beaches south of Kitty Hawk to use its "Summer Saver Route." Its page does not describe the route itself, so check the town's page or ask your rental company.

From Nags Head, the road onto Hatteras Island is NC 12 across Pea Island. Storms can close it, as they did in September and again in late October 2026. Check the travel alert at the top of this page and DriveNC.gov before you leave.

When to drive in: our reading of the data

These suggestions are derived from the 2022 and 2025 NCDOT studies above. They are not official NCDOT guidance.

  • Heading to Southern Shores, Duck or Corolla on a Saturday: aim to be over the bridge and on NC 12 before 8 a.m. Speeds on NC 12 had dropped to 25 mph by 8:14 a.m. and 7 mph by 10:05 a.m.
  • Can't make an early start? Plan to arrive later in the afternoon. Evening trips in 2022 ran about 20 minutes over free-flow, against more than an hour extra at midday.
  • Avoid midday. That is when 2022 travel times topped 100 minutes. In earlier surveys, police directed traffic until 4 p.m.
  • Think twice about app shortcuts through Southern Shores. The 2025 report found Google Maps estimates on those streets understated real travel time.
  • Leaving on Saturday? Southbound NC 12 is busier than on other days. An early departure avoids meeting the inbound peak at the bridge.

Check live conditions

  • DriveNC.gov: NCDOT's free traveler information site. It shows crashes, construction, weather closures, traffic cameras and ferry terminals, and has a free app.
  • 511: call 511 in North Carolina or 877-511-4662 from outside the state. Live operators answer weekdays 8:15 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., and weekends and state holidays 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Overnight, use DriveNC.gov.
  • Driving through Virginia: the Visitors Bureau points drivers to 511virginia.org.

Before you go

  • Check DriveNC.gov the night before and again before you leave.
  • Ask your rental company when you can check in and whether early arrival is possible.
  • Based on our reading of the data, plan to arrive before 8 a.m. or late afternoon, not midday.
  • Staying on Hatteras Island? Confirm NC 12 is open across Pea Island.
