You can only reach Ocracoke Island by boat or small plane, and four North Carolina state ferry routes serve it. The free Hatteras to Ocracoke vehicle ferry takes about 70 minutes and does not take reservations. In summer, the Ocracoke Express passenger ferry ($15 round trip) runs from Hatteras straight into Ocracoke Village.

In late October 2026, a nor'easter closed N.C. 12 between the Marc Basnight Bridge (Oregon Inlet) and Rodanthe. Dare County's evacuation order for visitors to Hatteras Island was still in effect on October 27. That means visitors coming from the northern beaches cannot currently drive to the Hatteras ferry terminal.

NCDOT was aiming to open a one-lane detour by noon on October 30, but said weather and tides could change that. N.C. 12 on Ocracoke itself was open. The Swan Quarter and Cedar Island routes were running, with reservations recommended.

Check before you plan anything:

The four routes at a glance

Route Crossing time Cost Reservations Runs
Hatteras to Ocracoke (vehicle ferry) About 70 min Free Not accepted Year round
Ocracoke Express (passenger only, from Hatteras) About 70 min $15 round trip Recommended May 5 to Sept. 7 in 2026, Monday to Saturday
Swan Quarter to Ocracoke About 2 hr 40 min Paid (see fares) Recommended Year round
Cedar Island to Ocracoke About 2 hr 15 min Paid (see fares) Recommended Year round

Where each one docks matters:

  • Hatteras vehicle ferry: leaves from Hatteras village and lands at South Dock, on the north end of Ocracoke Island. It does not land in the village.
  • Ocracoke Express: leaves from the Hatteras ferry terminal and lands at the Silver Lake terminal in Ocracoke Village.
  • Swan Quarter and Cedar Island: both mainland routes land at the Ocracoke Village terminal. The National Park Service lists the crossings as 32 miles of Pamlico Sound from Swan Quarter and 24 miles from Cedar Island.

Hatteras to Ocracoke: the free vehicle ferry

It is free for everyone and loads first come, first served.

The schedule changes four times a year. Daily departures, both directions combined, from NCDOT's 2026 schedule and press releases:

Period (2026) Departures per day What it looks like
Jan. 1 to Mar. 2 28 14 each way
Mar. 3 to Mar. 30 36 18 each way
Mar. 31 to Oct. 19 52 26 each way, roughly hourly or better in the daytime
Oct. 20 to Dec. 31 36 18 each way, three boats

From March 3 on, the first boat leaves Hatteras at 5 a.m. and the last leaves at midnight. In the current offseason schedule, boats leave Hatteras hourly from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m., then at 5, 6, 8, 9 and 11 p.m. and midnight. Exact times shift with each period, so use the live schedule PDF rather than a printed copy.

How early to arrive

NCDOT does not publish a "be there X minutes early" rule for this route. Its own wait-time chart for April to September rates Sunday as high, Saturday as medium and Friday as low. It also flags the days around July 4 for longer waits. That chart is based on 2019 service, so treat it as a pattern, not a promise.

The Park Service says you can leave your car in the stacking lanes to walk around. Be back 10 minutes before the next scheduled departure. The Hatteras terminal has restrooms and vending machines.

Ocracoke Express passenger ferry

The Express carries up to 129 passengers and docks in Ocracoke Village, so you skip the car line and the drive down the island. It runs only in summer. The 2026 season ran May 5 to Sept. 7, and NCDOT says service resumes in May 2027.

2026 departures (no Sunday service):

Days Leave Hatteras Leave Ocracoke (Silver Lake)
Tuesday to Thursday 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:45 p.m., 5 p.m. 9:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 7:30 p.m.

Fares: $15 round trip ($7.50 each way). Children under 3 ride free. A bicycle adds $1.

Reservations: recommended, and they open 90 days ahead. Book at ferry.ncdot.gov or call 1-800-BY-FERRY. Every passenger must check in at least 20 minutes before departure. Without a booking, you board first come, first served.

Parking: the Hatteras terminal has 110 spaces plus five overnight spaces, first come, first served. There is no overnight parking at the Ocracoke end.

What you can bring: small carry-ons, backpacks, purses, strollers and walkers. Bikes ride on racks.

Getting around Ocracoke without a car

NCDOT says the Silver Lake terminal is within walking distance of most village shops and restaurants. Hyde County runs a free tram that leaves from the terminal and loops through the village. Bike and golf cart rentals are available near the terminal.

Swan Quarter and Cedar Island: the mainland routes

These longer routes cross Pamlico Sound from the mainland. They suit you if you are arriving from inland North Carolina, or when the Hatteras approach is closed.

Summer 2026 times, for reference: Cedar Island and Ocracoke each sent boats at 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Swan Quarter departures were 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Reservation rules:

  • Book up to 90 days ahead at ferry.ncdot.gov or 1-800-BY-FERRY.
  • Claim your reservation at least 30 minutes before departure, or it is cancelled.
  • To change or cancel for a refund, call 1-800-BY-FERRY by 4 p.m. the day before.
  • Walk-on passengers and cyclists do not need a reservation. Groups of eight or more cyclists should call ahead.

Pets, RVs and motorcycles

  • Pets: allowed on the ferries. They must stay in your vehicle or on a leash, and you clean up after them. Only service animals may go inside visitor centers or passenger lounges.
  • RVs and trailers: the ferries take any car, trailer or RV that is legal on the highway. Vehicles over 65 feet need a special permit.
  • Motorcycles: the ferries have no tie-downs. Riders must stay with their bikes and hold them steady while the boat docks.

Checking delays and closures

Weather, tides, channel dredging and mechanical issues all change schedules, sometimes the same day. In 2026, the Hatteras route ran an alternate schedule during dredging from May 30 to June 24. It also ran limited schedules after the September and October storms.

A day trip from Corolla, Duck or Nags Head

Once N.C. 12 is open to visitors again, the day trip works like this:

  1. Drive south on N.C. 12 across the Marc Basnight Bridge and down Hatteras Island to the ferry terminal in Hatteras village.
  2. Take the free vehicle ferry (about 70 minutes) to South Dock, then drive N.C. 12 south into Ocracoke Village. Or, in summer, park at Hatteras and ride the Ocracoke Express straight into the village.
  3. Come back the same way. In summer, the last Express leaves Ocracoke at 7:30 p.m. The vehicle ferry runs until midnight year round.

We could not verify a drive time from the northern beaches to Hatteras from an official source, so we do not give one here. Check a mapping app the morning you go. N.C. 12 is the only road down Hatteras Island, so a single closure or slowdown affects everyone.

On a Tuesday to Thursday in summer, the 8:30 a.m. Express is the earliest option. That gives you most of the day in the village before a 3 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. return.

Before you go

  • Check DriveNC.gov and ncferry.org on the morning you leave, especially after any storm.
  • Sign up for FINS alerts for the route you plan to use.
  • Book the Ocracoke Express or the Swan Quarter and Cedar Island routes as soon as your dates are set.
  • Avoid Sunday and the days around July 4 on the free Hatteras route if you can.
  • Plan your return around the last departure. Missing it can mean an unplanned night on the island.
