Seven companies run guided wild horse tours from Corolla. Most are 2-hour rides in open-air trucks on the 4x4 beach north of town. Published adult prices run $55 to $75, but age rules and private options differ a lot, so check those first.

The Corolla wild horses: who they are

The Corolla wild horses are a herd of Banker horses, descended from Spanish colonial stock. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund traces their origin to Spanish explorers who brought horses to the coast in the 1500s.

The horses once roamed Corolla itself. After paving of NC 12 in 1985, cars killed many of them. The Fund moved the remaining horses north of the paved road, and a sea-to-sound fence was finished by 1997.

Today they range over 7,544 acres of the 4x4 area, from the end of the pavement north to the Virginia state line, about eleven miles. The Fund says about 70% of that land is private. Visit Currituck names Carova as one of the communities where you can spot them near houses and on the beach.

The Fund's site does not publish a current herd count.

The rules: distance, feeding and reporting

Currituck County's wild horse ordinance, as published by the Fund, makes it unlawful "to intentionally come within 50 feet of a wild horse." It is also unlawful to lure a horse within 50 feet of a person.

Rule What it means for you Source
50-foot distance Stay 50 feet away at all times, including when a horse walks up to you or stands under your rental house. County ordinance Sec. 3-31; Fund FAQ
No feeding Do not feed, ride or pet a horse, or approach one to do so. Fund staff say horses have died after eating human food. County ordinance Sec. 3-36; Fund FAQ
No domestic horses You may not bring or ride your own horse in the area from the end of paved NC 12 to the Virginia line. County ordinance, as quoted by the Fund
Injured horse Do not approach. Call the Fund at (252) 453-8002, or Currituck County dispatch at (252) 453-3633 after hours. Fund FAQ
Harassment Call sheriff's dispatch at (252) 453-3633 with the mile marker and a description of the people and vehicles. Fund FAQ

About fines: the ordinance excerpt the Fund publishes does not state a penalty amount. We could not confirm a fine figure in county code. Check the Currituck County Code of Ordinances or call the county before you go.

The section numbers above come from an ordinance PDF the Fund posted in 2012. The county says its online code is for reference only.

Seeing the horses on your own vs. taking a tour

You can drive the 4x4 beach yourself in a true four-wheel-drive vehicle. The county says vehicles without 4WD should not drive on the beach. Visit Currituck adds that 2WD and AWD vehicles risk getting stuck.

4x4 beach rule (2026 season) Detail
Speed limit 35 mph; 15 mph within 300 feet of any person
Tire pressure Air down before the ramp: 20 PSI for SUVs and half-ton 4x4s, 35 PSI for three-quarter-ton 4x4s
Parking permit season Second Saturday of May to the last Saturday in September
Visitor parking permit $50 per week, limited to 300 per week, for visitors not renting in the 4WD area
Renting in the 4WD area Your rental company or owner should provide 2 permits
No-parking zone First 1.5 miles north of the ramp
Fuel No gas stations in the 4x4 area; fill up first

Visit Currituck's FAQ says parking on the beach in season without a permit carries a $100 fine. It lists a $50 fine for breaking the tire pressure rule.

Drive yourself if you have a real 4WD, are comfortable in soft sand, and want to set your own pace. Take a tour if you rent a car, have no 4WD, or want a guide who knows where the herd has been lately. Visit Currituck notes that tours tend to sell out, so book early.

About the Fund's own offerings: the Fund's website does not list beach tours. It runs Mustang Mornings at its farm in Grandy on the mainland, where you meet rescued horses (not the wild herd). The 2026 dates were Wednesdays, May 27 to August 26, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a suggested $10 donation per vehicle. Its next listed farm event is a Fall Open House on November 7, 2026, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 102 Young Rider Lane, Grandy.

Which tour fits

This is not a ranking. Each pick uses only the facts in the tables above.

  • Toddlers and babies: Back Beach Wild Horse Tours, because it states no age limit and says staff help secure the car seat you bring.
  • A private group: Back Country Safari Tours, because its private tour seats up to 12 for $540, the only private price listed.
  • Lowest published price per person: Back Country Safari Tours, at $55 per adult and $45 per child. Corolla Wild Horse Tours matches $55 on weekends.
  • Most time on the beach: Corolla Outback Adventures, whose VIP extended tour runs about 20 minutes longer than its standard 2-hour tour.
  • A winter visit in an enclosed vehicle: Corolla Wild Horse Tours or Back Beach, which both list enclosed SUV tours from January to March.
  • Supporting the Fund: Bob's Corolla Wild Horse Tours, the only operator whose site states a donation match. It dates from December 2024, so confirm it still applies.

You can also support the herd directly through the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, whatever tour you take.

We have not yet completed our review audit for these operators; picks are based on published facts as of 29 Oct 2026.

Before you go

  • Book ahead in summer; tours fill up.
  • Bring your own car seat for young children, and confirm the operator's age limit first.
  • Ask whether taxes or fees are added to the listed price.
  • Check each operator's cancellation policy; several charge in full within 48 hours.
  • Stay 50 feet from every horse, even from a tour vehicle or your rental deck.
  • If you drive yourself, air down, carry your parking permit in season, and fill your tank first.
